Water Development and Sanitation Minister, Collins Nzovu, says Mulonga Water Supply and Sanitation Company has successfully completed the rehabilitation and pump-replacement project in Chililabombwe, a development expected to end weeks-long water shortages that affected residents.
The works, valued at €1,127,191.59, involved replacing obsolete pumps and installing modern pumping equipment, along with new electrical infrastructure. According to the minister, the intervention is already benefiting an estimated 6,000 residents in the affected section of Konkola Township.
Nzovu said the project formed part of the broader Zambia Water and Sanitation Project, under which MWSC is rehabilitating and upgrading water and sanitation infrastructure in Chingola, Chililabombwe, and Mufulira.
He explained that Section B of Konkola Township suffered acute water supply challenges after a major pump failure on January 24, 2026. During rehabilitation, operations relied on a smaller pump, resulting in highly inconsistent water supply.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday by Ministry Principal Public Relations Officer Prince Chiyuni, the successful installation of new pumps and modern electrical systems at both the Konkola Water Treatment Plant and the Mingomba Raw Water Pump Station has now stabilised distribution and restored reliable supply to affected households.
Nzovu said the development underscored government’s commitment to strengthening water security and improving service delivery across the country.
He urged the utility company to continue improving operational efficiency, maintain prompt technical responses, and enhance customer service delivery.
“The restored infrastructure is expected to provide a more stable, efficient, and equitable water supply system for the Konkola community,” he said.
Nzovu reaffirmed government’s commitment to working with water utility companies nationwide to support sustainable access to safe and clean water, in line with national development priorities.
