New Heritage Party leader, Chishala Kateka, has reported five ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) officials for threatening violence and hate speech.

Those reported to police include Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Minister, Charles Milupi, UPND Vice National Youth Chairperson, Trevor Mwiinde, and North Western Province Youth Chairperson, Bruce Kanema.

Others are UPND Councillor for Kibanza Ward in Kalumbila District, Moses Mokela, and Party Youth Chairperson for Security in Livingstone Phillip Musela.

“I wish to report Honourable Milupi for inciting violence against those who speak ill of the current Republican President,” said Kateka after reporting the officials on Tuesday at Lusaka Central Police.

She said this incitement was contained in a video taken on April 12, 2024, in Mongu, which had been widely circulated on social media.

Additionally, Kateka reported Mwiinde for threatening violence against former President Edgar Lungu.

“I wish to report Trevor Mwiinde, UPND Vice National Youth Chairperson, for threatening violence against the former Republican President Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu,” she said, noting that this was contained in a video widely circulated around May 17, 2024.

She also reported Kanema for hate speech and inciting violence against former President Lungu.

“I wish to report Bruce Kanema, UPND Provincial Youth Chairman for North Western Province, for hate speech and inciting violence against the former Republican President Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu,” Kateka said, adding that the information had been widely shared on social media.

Regarding Mokela, Kateka reported the official for hate speech, inciting violence, using derogatory language, and threatening an individual’s life.

“I wish to report Moses Mokela, UPND Councillor for Kibanza Ward in Kalumbila District, for hate speech, inciting violence, using derogatory language, and threatening violence and the life of an individual,” she said, stating that the information was contained in a widely shared video on social media.

She further reported Musela for threatening violence and stated that the UPND youth could take the law into their own hands.

“I wish to report Mr. Phillip Musela, UPND Youth Chairman for Security in Livingstone, for threatening violence and stating that UPND youth will take the law into their own hands,” Kateka added.

She mentioned that the targets of these threats were Petauke Central lawmaker Emmanuel Banda and former President Lungu.

Kateka expressed concern that Zambia was slowly becoming characterized by violence due to cadres being allowed to get away with such behavior.

“It is the duty of the Zambia Police to take keen interest in such matters, make follow-ups and even arrests,” she emphasized, noting that this would act as a deterrent to future offenders.

“We risk becoming a nation that is selective in the application of our laws, where there is one law for the poor and weak and another for the rich, powerful and those in authority,” she said.
