A pedestrian has died while 34 passengers sustained injuries after a Lusaka-bound public service bus overturned in Chisamba early Friday morning.

Police spokesperson, Godfrey Chilabi, said in a statement on Friday that the accident happened around 05:00 hours at Liteta Trading Area along the Great North Road, involving an Asiastar bus registration AIF 9348ZM owned by African’s Gate.

The bus was being driven by Mwanza Joseph, 42, and was travelling from Nakonde with an unverified number of passengers on board.

Chilabi said 34 passengers were injured in the crash, several of whom have since been treated and discharged from Liteta District Hospital, including the driver.

A pedestrian, Chansa Chile, 44, was struck when the bus lost control.

He was rushed to hospital but died around 12:30 hours while receiving treatment.

His body has been placed in the Liteta Hospital mortuary.

Preliminary police investigations point to excessive speed as the cause of the crash, which resulted in the bus overturning. Officers say further inquiries are underway.

The Police Service has since appealed to public service vehicle drivers to strictly adhere to speed limits and road traffic regulations, warning that negligence continues to pose a serious danger to lives on Zambia’s roads.
