PF crisis takes new turn as party expels MPs who voted for constitution amendment Bill No. 7

The Patriotic Front (PF) Central Committee says it has resolved to expel party Members of Parliament who attended sittings of the National Assembly and voted in favour of the enacted Constitutional Amendment Bill Number 7.

The Committee noted that the lawmakers acted against a duly issued three-line whip and the established international parliamentary practice invoked by the party.

In a communique issued in Lusaka on Monday, and pursuant to Article 61(j) of the PF Constitution, the Central Committee also ratified the removal from membership of the Central Committee of Musonda Mpankata, Brenda Nyirenda and Melisiana Phiri.

Others removed are Abuid Kawangu, Tombi Tombi, Christopher Shakafuswa and Chomba Chipili.

The Central Committee further acknowledged receiving exculpatory letters from Mporokoso lawmaker and 2026 aspiring presidential candidate Brian Mundubile, who is accused of forming parallel party structures with Japhen Mwakalombe and Davis Chisopa.

Exculpatory letters were also issued to former Lusaka Province Chairperson Kennedy Kamba and Kabwe Mayor Patrick Chishala for committing similar offences.

“The meeting resolved that disciplinary action, where necessary, shall be considered after the Kasama Mayoral By-Election,” reads the communique.

The Committee also resolved that the General Conference would be held by the end of February 2026, and that names for appointment to an Independent Electoral Commission for the General Conference would be presented at the next meeting.

It was further resolved that 350 additional delegates would be admitted to the National Council to include mayors and councillors. The Party Secretariat will authenticate the final delegate list in view of concerns regarding possible manipulation.

“The Central Committee took note of pronouncements made at an illegal Tonse Alliance meeting chaired by Chief Apostle Dan Pule, which purported to expel the so-called ‘Lubinda-led PF’ and ‘Chabinga-led PF’ from the Alliance,” it said.

The matter will be addressed after the Kasama Mayoral By-Election.

In accordance with Article 58 of the PF Constitution, the Central Committee ratified the appointments of Jean Kapata as Acting National Chairperson, Miles Sampa as Acting Deputy Secretary General (Politics), and Celestine Mukandila as Acting Deputy Secretary General (Administration).

Others appointed are Frank N’gambi as Acting Chairperson for Elections, Vibetti Chanda as Chairperson for Northern Province, Goodson Banda as Member of the Central Committee, and Brave Mwetwa as Member of the Central Committee.

Also appointed were Adora Alinadi, Lawrence Sichalwe, Warren Bwale, and Tasila Lungu Mwansa as Members of the Central Committee.

The Extraordinary Central Committee Meeting was held on Saturday, January 17, 2026, and was chaired by Acting Party President Given Lubinda.
