Police confiscate counterfeit sugar, Rwandese arrested

Police in Lusaka have confiscated 33 x 50 Kilogrammes bags of Kafue Industrial Sugar, which was being repackaged in 2 kgs of Zambia Sugar counterfeit packages.

Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Danny Mwale, said Police also confiscated 200 bales of white Sugar (already repackaged), 10 boxes of empty packets of Sugar, three date stamps, three weighing machines and heat guns, which were found in the house in Chipata overspill area.

Mwale in a statement isssued in Lusaka on Saturday said the owner of the house believed to be a Rwandese identified as, Jean Mupenzi, aged 28 has been arrested and detained in Police custody.

He said brief facts are that on May 12, 2023 Police received information from concerned members of the public that there was a person within Chipata overspill who they suspected to be involved in illegal businesses.

“Immediately investigations were instituted and today around 04:00 hours a search was conducted leading to the discovery and arrest of the suspect,” Mwale said.

He said that investigations into the matter are ongoing.
