President Hakainde Hichilema has expressed profound sorrow following the death of Emmanuel Bwalya, a second-year student in the School of Humanities at the University of Zambia.

Hichilema described the loss as a tragedy for the student’s family, the university community, and the nation, according to a statement issued by State House Chief Communications Specialist Clayson Hamasaka in Lusaka on Wednesday.

“Emmanuel was a young Zambian with a bright future ahead of him,” President Hichilema said, extending his deepest condolences to those who knew him.

He called on students to remain calm and to respond through dialogue and restraint, emphasising a shared resolve to find lasting solutions to challenges facing higher learning institutions.

“No further loss is acceptable. No family should ever receive this kind of news again,” the Head of State added, urging Zambians to keep the bereaved family in their thoughts and prayers.

Bwalya died after reportedly drowning in an open pit on campus, police said on Wednesday.

The incident occurred shortly after President Hichilema called an emergency meeting over worsening sanitation conditions at public universities.

Preliminary investigations suggest Bwalya accidentally fell into a water-filled pit and drowned.

He was retrieved by personnel from the Zambia National Service and rushed to Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
