Zambia Congress of Trade Union (ZCTU) has implored government to quickly conclude the issue of debt restructuring the country is going through for the benefit of Zambians.

The labour movement has further challenged government to clearly state its position on the future of Konkola Copper Mine (KCM).

Speaking in Kalomo District during this year’s Labour Day Celebrations on Monday, ZCTU Representative, Clark Siankulu, said the issue of the country’s debt was a concern to the labour movement.

Siankulu said that the process must be quickly be concluded for the benefit of workers.

He said currently workers were feeling the impact of the debt situation, hence the need for the government to conclude the issue as soon as possible.

“We are concerned as a labour movement with the slow pace the government is taking in concluding the issue of debt restructuring. Workers of Zambia are suppressed with this issue because the cost of living is on the rise,” he said.

Siankulu also observed that government was taking long to pronounce the future of KCM.

He said that currently, there were a lot of speculations among citizens which must be avoided.

Speaking at the same event, Kalomo Central Member of Parliament, Harry Kamboni, called on the labour movement in the country to prioritise the welfare of their members.

Kamboni said that it is imperative to value and respect the role of workers in the country.

He noted that there were some employers who do not respect and value what employees do and added that such must not be accepted.
