Retired soldier to face trial on May 6 for alleged sexual abuse of a minor

A 76-year-old retired soldier of Chibolya Compound has appeared at the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court for allegedly sexually abusing a minor.

Kanche Muloko is charged with indecent assault on females contrary to section 137(1) of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the laws of Zambia.

Muloko is also answerable to one count of defilement of a child contrary to Section 138(1) of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the laws of Zambia.

It is alleged that the accused on December 25, 2023, indecently assulted the girl and on January 1, 2024 he had carnal knowledge of the same victim.

Muloko, however, pleaded not guilty to both counts when he appeared before Magistrate Mutinta Mwenya, on Friday.

The accused who was without legal representation requested for bail, which was granted at K1,000 cash with two working sureties of fixed abode.

He told the Court that he had no relatives who worked in government to serve as sureties, but Magistrate Mwenya advised him to pay attention to detail as sureties were not only government workers.

She further advised the accused to seek legal representation from the Legal Aid Board at a minimal fee.

The matter was adjourned to May 6, 2024 for commencement of trial with the State expected to bring six witnesses.
