Some private sector firms from Serbia are reportedly in the process of setting up tractor and fertiliser assembly plants in Zambia.
Newly accredited Serbian Ambassador to Zambia, Jasna Zrnovic, said a delegation of Zambian officials is expected to visit Serbia before the end of the year to finalise arrangements for establishing the factories.
According to a statement issued by Paul Shalala, the Ministry of Defence Principal Public Relations Officer, on Wednesday, Zrnovic said Serbian companies intend to train Zambian experts in tractor assembly and fertiliser production ahead of the factories’ establishment.
Speaking when she paid a courtesy call on Minister of Defence, Ambrose Lufuma, Zrnovic said funding for the projects was already available and that Zambians who would work at the plants would receive capacity-building training in Serbia.

“My role as a newly accredited envoy will be to strengthen relations between my country and Zambia, especially on the economic and defence sides,” she said.
In response, Lufuma welcomed the decision by Serbian companies to invest in Zambia, saying the establishment of tractor and fertiliser factories would spur growth in the agriculture sector.
“Zambia is blessed with good soils and is a good investment destination in the agriculture sector due to a favourable climate,” he said.
Lufuma further called for increased partnerships between Zambian and Serbian companies in sectors such as agriculture, transport, and tourism to strengthen bilateral economic cooperation.
