Some voters have taken to social media to post pictures and videos of their marked ballot papers, raising concerns over the secrecy of the ballot in Zambia’s 2026 general elections.
The trend has seen voters capture images of their completed ballot papers inside polling stations before sharing them on platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp and TikTok.
The practice has sparked debate among voters and election stakeholders, with concerns that photographing a marked ballot could undermine the principle of a secret ballot and expose voters to pressure or influence.

The secret ballot is intended to allow voters to make their choices freely and privately, without revealing how they have voted to political parties, candidates or other individuals.
Election observers and civic organisations have repeatedly urged voters to protect the secrecy of their vote and follow instructions issued by electoral authorities at polling stations.
While some voters may post their ballots to publicly demonstrate their political choices or show that they have participated in the election, such actions could create risks if the images are used to prove how a person voted.
The development has also raised questions about the increasing influence of social media on the electoral process, particularly as voters increasingly use smartphones to document their experiences on election day.
Authorities and election stakeholders are expected to continue reminding voters that the right to vote freely also comes with the responsibility to protect the integrity and secrecy of the ballot.
