Three people have died and 15 others were seriously injured in a road accident in central Zambia, police said on Sunday.

The crash occurred on April 11 around 0940 hours in the Luanshimba area along the Great North Road in Kapiri Mposhi District.

Police spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi said the accident involved a Nissan Caravan minibus, a public service vehicle driven by Watson Sililo, 36, of Lusaka West, which had 18 passengers on board.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver, who was travelling towards Kabwe, lost control of the vehicle due to excessive speed. The minibus veered off the road and overturned into a drainage.

Three passengers died on the spot as a result of the impact. They were identified as Elton Mulenga, 38, of Lusaka, an unidentified adult male, and a female juvenile whose identity has yet to be established.

“15 passengers, comprising five (5) males and ten (10) females, sustained serious injuries and have been admitted to Kapiri Mposhi District Hospital, where they are receiving treatment,” Chilabi said.

He added that the bodies of the deceased had been taken to Kapiri Mposhi Urban Hospital mortuary pending identification and post-mortem examinations.

Police have launched investigations to establish the full circumstances surrounding the accident.

“We urge all motorists to exercise caution, observe speed limits, and strictly adhere to road traffic regulations to prevent loss of life,” Chilabi said.
