The Zambia Police Service says it has recorded a fatal road traffic accident in Chirundu involving three trucks, leaving two drivers and one passenger dead while another person escaped unhurt.

Police spokesperson, Godfrey Chilabi, said the accident occurred on 18 March 2026 around 14:30 hours along the Chirundu–Kafue Road at Musaya Bridge near the Malengo area.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Thursday, Chilabi said the crash involved three trucks travelling in the same direction: an International truck and trailer in front, a Freightliner truck and trailer in the middle, and a Shacman tanker truck and trailer at the rear.

The International truck, bearing Zimbabwean registration numbers AEG 5857, AGB 0203 and AGB 0202, belongs to Bindura Haulage Company and was driven by Kainzi Kanyera, 51, of Harare. He escaped unhurt.

The Freightliner truck and trailer, registration ACQ 4755 and AEU 7056, was driven by Washington Muzowa, 45, also of Harare.

He sustained serious head injuries and later died at Mtendere Mission Hospital.

The Shacman tanker truck, registration AIE 2294 and ALM 6663, was driven by an unidentified man aged between 40 and 45, who also died at Mtendere Mission Hospital. An unidentified male passenger, aged 30 to 35, travelling in the same truck, died from his injuries.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the accident happened when the driver of the International truck allegedly stopped abruptly, causing the following Freightliner to collide with it.

The Shacman tanker truck then failed to stop in time and crashed into the Freightliner. The impact caused the tanker to veer off the road and plunge into Musaya Bridge.

Chilabi said the three bodies have been deposited in the Mtendere Mission Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem examination, adding that two victims are yet to be identified.

He appealed to members of the public with information that could assist in identifying the deceased to contact Chirundu Police Station.

“Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously and maintain safe following distances to prevent such tragedies,” Chilabi said.
