Tragedy in Zimbabwe as 13 bodies retrieved after boat accident on Lake Kariba

Thirteen bodies have been retrieved from Lake Kariba following a Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA) Boat accident that occurred on the afternoon of August 11, 2026, the Zimbabwe Republic Police has confirmed.

67 victims were rescued and taken to Mahombe-kombe Primary School Command Centre for medical attention and further management, according to the Police officials.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the police said the search process was still underway for missing victims on lake Kariba shared with Zambia in Siavonga District.

Authorities were still verifying the exact number of people who were aboard the vessel. However, he confirmed carrying capacity of the boat was 90 people, excluding the five crew members.

Initial information provided to the Lake captain indicated the boat was carrying 120 people, comprising 108 adults and 12 children, who were traveling from Kariba to Chalala. However, police investigations suggest the boat could have been carrying more passengers than initially reported.

“Reference is made to the Zimbabwe Republic Police’s social media post in connection with Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA) boat accident which occurred on 11th August 2026 in the afternoon,” reads the statement.

Police said relatives were being contacted as the search continues, and more details would be availed once they are confirmed.

“In this regard more details will be availed as relatives are contacted while the search process continues,” reads the statement.
