U.S. President Donald J. Trump said on Saturday that the United States had carried out a major bombing raid against Iranian military targets on Kharg Island, in a message posted on his official page on Facebook.
In the post, Trump said the operation was conducted by United States Central Command and described it as “one of the most powerful bombing raids in the history of the Middle East.”
Trump said the strikes had “totally obliterated every military target” on the island, which lies in the Persian Gulf and serves as a key oil export hub for Iran.
“Our weapons are the most powerful and sophisticated that the world has ever known,” Trump wrote, adding that he had chosen not to target the island’s oil infrastructure “for reasons of decency.”

Kharg Island is located near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, a narrow shipping route through which a large share of the world’s oil supplies pass.
Trump warned that the United States could reconsider sparing oil facilities if Iran or other actors interfere with the “free and safe passage of ships” through the strait.
“Iran has no ability to defend anything that we want to attack,” Trump wrote, adding that Tehran would “never have a nuclear weapon.”
