University of Zambia undergraduate, Chibesakunda, dies from electrocution

A third-year student studying Public Administration at the University of Zambia (UNZA), Margret Chibesakunda, has died after been electrocuted.

Chibesakunda, aged 22, was reported to have been fatally electrocuted while attempting to plug her phone for charging.

Police Spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga, in a statement issued in Lusaka on Sunday, said the report was made by Mwanja Daka, a registered nurse at UNZ Clinic.

Hamoonga stated that the incident occurred around 21:30 hours at October Block 2, Room 23, of UNZA Great East Road Campus.

“On the evening of April 6, 2024, at approximately 23:40 hours Chelston Police Station received a distressing report of electrocution from Mwanja Daka, aged 29, residing at house 86/24 Ng’ombe Chimulambe Street,” he said.

Hammonga added that Chibesakunda sustained severe burns on her neck, right elbow, leg and despite efforts to save her, she succumbed to her injuries.

He said following the unfortunate event, there was a spontaneous demonstration by UNZA students, obstructing the Great East Road with stones and drums.

“In response, police officers swiftly intervened to restore public order.The students were urged to mourn within the campus premises rather than disrupting public order,” Hamoonga stated.

He said fortunately, the students complied with the advice and returned to the University grounds.

Hamoonga said that the deceased’s body had been transferred to UNZA clinic and subsequently deposited at the University Teaching Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem and burial.

“The Zambia Police Service extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Margret Chibesakunda during this difficult time,” he said.

Hamoonga indicated that investigations into the circumstances surrounding the electrocution incident was ongoing.

He assured the family and the public of the Police’s commitment to ensuring that justice was served.
