Yango Zambia, part of global tech company Yango Group, and the Zambia Road Safety Trust (ZRST) have expanded the ‘Safer Journeys to School initiative’. from five schools in 2025 to 15 additional schools in 2026, reaching more than 24,000 children across Lusaka.

This builds on a successful pilot that benefited over 8,000 learners in 2025, the initiative combines road safety education with practical infrastructure improvements, including zebra crossings, speed humps, school zone signage and road markings in high-risk school areas.

The programme has also established Road Safety Champions Clubs, empowering children to promote safer roads within their schools and communities.

Speaking at the launch, Dr. Emmanuel Sampa, representing the Ministry of Transport and Logistics, praised the partnership for helping address road safety risks facing schoolchildren.

“Every child has the right to travel to school without fear of injury or harm. The expansion of this programme demonstrates what can be achieved when the government, civil society and the private sector work together to protect our learners,” he said.

The initiative also encourages active community participation. At Chelstone Secondary School, learner road safety ambassadors Charles Siyulu and Mulenga Chanda helped highlight safety concerns around their school, contributing to improvements that have since become part of the wider programme.

ZRST Executive Director Daniel Mwamba said the partnership demonstrates the impact of combining education with practical interventions.

“Road safety around schools is fundamentally a child protection issue. Through this partnership with Yango, we have improved school environments while equipping learners with the knowledge to become road safety advocates. The programme’s expansion reflects what is possible through shared commitment,” he said.

Yango Zambia Country Head, Kabanda Chewe said the initiative reflects the company’s commitment to creating safer communities through responsible mobility.

“At Yango, we believe every child deserves a safe journey to school. Beyond infrastructure, this programme empowers young people, strengthens communities and demonstrates the value of long-term partnerships in improving road safety,” she said.

In addition to the Safer Journeys to School initiative, Yango continues to invest in road safety through school zone voice prompts that alert drivers, reflective safety materials for children, and awareness programmes delivered with local partners.

By combining education, infrastructure and collaboration, Yango Zambia and ZRST are helping make safer journeys to school a lasting reality for thousands of children in Zambia.
