Yango Zambia and ZRST launch safer journeys to school initiative to protect children on Lusaka roads

Yango Zambia, part of the global tech company Yango Group, in partnership with the Zambia Road Safety Trust (ZRST), has launched the Safer Journeys to School initiative.

The program is designed to reduce road traffic injuries among school-going children through road safety education and safer infrastructure improvements around high-risk schools in Lusaka.

The initiative has delivered structured road safety training to over 8,000 children and implemented safety upgrades, including zebra crossings, speed humps, signage, and road markings at five government schools identified as high-risk zones: Arthur Wina Primary, Mumuni Primary, Twatasha Primary, New Mandevu Primary, and Chilenje South Secondary.

Speaking at the event, Minister of Transport and Logistics, Frank Tayali, represented by Eng. Nkumbu Siame, the Director for Transport, said:

“On behalf of the Ministry of Transport, I stand before you today with immense pride and a profound sense of duty to celebrate the launch of the Safer Journeys to School Program, which is a transformative initiative that protects our children and secures bright futures for our nation.

Our roads are the lifelines of Zambia, yet they also carry a tragic burden. Over a quarter of all road traffic fatalities in Zambia involve children — a reality we cannot and will not accept.

The Safer Journeys to School Program, proudly sponsored by Yango and implemented by the Zambia Road Safety Trust, is our determined response to this crisis.”

The project responds to alarming statistics: Lusaka recorded 19,180 road traffic accidents in 2024, with 2,199 fatalities, including 201 children under the age of 16.

Vulnerable road users, particularly school children, remain disproportionately at risk, making this initiative a national transport safety priority.

Speaking about the initiative, Kabanda Chewe, Country Head for Yango Zambia, said: “Every child deserves to walk to school without fear. Every parent deserves the peace of mind that their child will return home safely. And every driver must embrace the responsibility that comes with being behind the wheel.

At Yango, we are proud not only to have delivered this project, but to set a new standard — safer schools, safer roads, and safer communities.

This is how we move from being just a mobility provider to becoming a true partner in Zambia’s development journey.”

The initiative will also establish school-based “Road Safety Champions Clubs”, training teachers and peer leaders to sustain education and advocacy beyond the project period. By aligning with international road safety standards, the program aims to achieve a minimum 3-star iRAP safety rating for school routes while fostering community ownership of these safety measures.

Yango has further strengthened its commitment to road safety by introducing a voice prompt feature on its app that alerts drivers when they are approaching a school zone, encouraging them to reduce speed and enhance the safety of children in these areas.

As a company that prioritizes safety, Yango has also distributed reflective wristbands and T-shirts designed to improve their visibility at night, ensuring that children can be easily seen when crossing roads after dark.

Yango has previously supported community-based safety and awareness campaigns, including health screenings for partner drivers, courier training programs, and road safety education sessions, with more planned for the future.

The Safer Journeys to School project builds on these efforts by directly targeting the safety of children, one of the most vulnerable groups on the road.

Through partnerships like this, Yango continues to demonstrate its long-term commitment to Zambia, working with government, schools, and local communities to make everyday journeys safer and more sustainable for all.
