Zambia, Norway move to deepen cooperation on climate action, environmental protection

Zambia and Norway have agreed to deepen cooperation on climate action, environmental protection, and sustainable development following a bilateral meeting between Zambia’s High Commissioner to Kenya, Alfred Musemuna, and Norway’s Minister of Climate and Environment, Andreas Bjelland Eriksen.

According to a statement issued on Friday, Musemuna expressed Zambia’s appreciation for Norway’s longstanding support in advancing multilateral environmental initiatives and national climate priorities.

Central to the talks were opportunities to scale up collaboration in key areas, including Zambia’s participation in carbon markets under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. Musemuna noted that expanding Zambia’s role in international carbon trading would support access to additional climate finance.

He also underscored the need for joint investments in forest conservation, ecosystem restoration, and climate resilience programmes aimed at protecting biodiversity, enhancing carbon sequestration, and reducing climate-related vulnerabilities among communities.

Eriksen reaffirmed Norway’s commitment to the partnership, saying both countries share a strong interest in sustainable land management and environmental stewardship.

“Norway is committed to collaborating with Zambia to advance high-quality carbon projects, strengthen institutional capacity, and mobilize climate finance to support sustainable development objectives,” he said.

The meeting further explored opportunities for technical cooperation in carbon accounting, monitoring, and registry systems, as well as mobilising green finance to accelerate Zambia’s sustainability agenda.

Both parties agreed that a formal cooperation agreement—scheduled for signing in Lusaka in January 2026—will provide a structured framework to consolidate joint efforts and broaden stakeholder engagement.

The discussions also highlighted prospects for energy sector collaboration, particularly within hydropower-dependent systems, where both nations aim to share expertise on regulation, management, and resilience-building.

The engagement reaffirmed the strong partnership between Zambia and Norway and underscored a mutual commitment to advancing climate action, promoting environmental sustainability, and building long-term climate resilience.
