Zambia has reaffirmed its commitment to global environmental governance and sustainable development at the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA), the world’s highest-level decision-making body on environmental matters.
The country’s position was underscored during the Seventh Open-Ended Committee of Permanent Representatives (OECPR-7), held in Nairobi from December 1–6, 2025, ahead of the main UNEA-7 Assembly currently taking place from December 8–12, 2025.
Representing Minister of Green Economy and Environment, Mike Mposha, Zambia’s delegation was led by Alfred Musemuna, Zambia’s High Commissioner to Kenya and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
According to a statement issued by the Zambian High Commission in Nairobi on Thursday, the delegation expressed strong support for a key resolution at OECPR-7.
“The nation articulated strong support for a pivotal resolution concerning the environmentally sound management of minerals and metals, including providing comprehensive guidance for achieving mineral resources circularity,” the statement reads.
This resolution was particularly significant for Zambia, whose economy relies heavily on mineral extraction.
Throughout UNEA-7, Zambia will remain actively engaged in negotiations on environmental priorities with a focus on advancing the formalisation of international instruments and promoting circularity in the mineral resources sector.
The OECPR-7 served as the main platform for negotiating draft resolutions to be presented for adoption by ministers during UNEA-7, which convenes under the theme: ‘Advancing Sustainable Solutions for a Resilient Planet.’
UNEA-7 aims to accelerate global efforts to confront the triple planetary crisis—climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.
The event brought together environment ministers, scientists, civil society organisations, and private sector leaders for high-level discussions on urgent global actions.
The Assembly would also consider the adoption of UNEP’s new strategy and several key resolutions intended to strengthen collective action for a more resilient and sustainable planet.
