Zambia and Switzerland have authorised a new greenhouse gas mitigation activity that will deploy 200,000 clean cookstoves across four Provinces, Ministry of Green Economy and Environment officials announced on Thursday in Lusaka.
The activity, named “Modern Energy Cooking Zambia”, will replace Charcoal with biomass pellets made from sustainable wood residues sourced from local sawmills, according to a statement issued on Thursday.
The project is being implemented by Emerging Cooking Solutions, trading as SupaMoto, in partnership with the Supporting Preparedness for Article 6 Cooperation program, the KLiK Foundation, and both governments.
It is the second activity to be authorised under the Zambia-Switzerland Bilateral Agreement and one of Zambia’s first mitigation activities under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.
“We are pleased to mark another milestone under our bilateral agreement with Switzerland, with the issuance of a second authorisation for Emerging Cooking Solutions ‘SupaMoto,’ said Dr. Douty Chibamba, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry.
Chibamba said Zambia’s leadership in high-integrity carbon markets continued to grow from establishing carbon-market governance and regulations, to developing a national carbon registry and advancing bilateral Article 6 cooperation that could translate climate ambition into real investment for our people.
He said the Government had already seen benefits from clean energy cookstoves in reducing pressure on forests and lowering carbon emissions and the Ministry would oversee implementation in Lusaka, Central, Copperbelt, and North-Western provinces.
“Today, we are not only authorising another mitigation activity, but we are demonstrating that Zambia can build carbon markets that protect our environment, strengthen livelihoods, and deliver credible climate action for generations to come,” Chibamba stated.
Mattias Ohlson, Group CEO of Emerging Cooking Solutions said through the Article 6 framework with Switzerland and Zambia, the two countries were finally able to bridge the affordability gap and deliver modern, forest-friendly energy to the urban Zambian households that need it most.
“We are delighted that, with authorisation from both partner countries, the activity can now officially begin implementation,” said Darja Aeple, Chief Operating Officer, KLiK Foundation.
Aeple said as the second authorised activity under the Switzerland-Zambia Article 6 partnership, this shows that high-integrity cooperation in the carbon market can efficiently transition from planning to real-world impact, delivering emission reductions and meaningful benefits to local communities.
Zambia and Switzerland signed the bilateral climate agreement in November 2025 at COP in Belém, Brazil and the Modern Energy Cooking activity was one of three pilot projects selected under SPAR6C to advance Zambia’s readiness for Article 6 cooperation.
