Zambian Breweries reacts to allegations of smuggling, using ethanol in brewing process

Zambian Breweries has responded to recent allegations by the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) linking the company to the smuggling of undeclared ethanol allegedly intended for use in its brewing process.

In a statement, the company affirmed that its beers were produced solely from natural ingredients including malted barley, sorghum, cassava, maize, hops, and water, all under strict quality and safety standards.

The ZRA recently intercepted two trucks carrying 66,000 litres of undeclared ethanol, misdeclared as Calcium Hypochlorite, at the Nakonde One-Stop Border Post.

The seized ethanol, valued at over K3 million in potential revenue loss, was confiscated between August 3 and 6 along the Great North Road.

Zambian Breweries was named as the importer linked to the shipment.

Responding to the allegations, Zambian Breweries stated: “We unequivocally deny using ethanol in our brewing process. We are working closely with ZRA to clarify how our company’s details became linked to this shipment.”

The company reiterated its full compliance with all relevant laws, including the Customs and Excise Act, and emphasized its commitment to transparent and ethical business conduct.

As one of Zambia’s largest taxpayers, Zambian Breweries assured customers and stakeholders that its operations continue unaffected.

“We remain fully cooperative with authorities to protect our reputation and ensure the truth is established,” the statement added.
