The Chingola Immigration Office has apprehended 17 foreign nationals en route to Mufumbwe District for suspected illegal gold mining, according to preliminary investigations.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Department of Immigration Chief Public Relations Officer, Namati Nshinka, said the group, comprising 16 Tanzanians and one Malawian, was intercepted at a security checkpoint in Chingola while aboard an LG Bus from Nakonde to Solwezi.

“Two metal-detecting machines were found in their possession and confiscated. The individuals had entered Zambia as ordinary visitors and are now detained pending further immigration processes,” Nshinka stated.

In a separate operation, the Lusaka Regional Immigration Office conducted compliance inspections on July 7, 2025, targeting various business establishments within the city.

The exercise led to the withdrawal of nine permits from foreign nationals found violating the conditions of their stay.

Those affected included four Indians, two Chinese, one Pakistani holding Employment Permits, and two Indians on Residence Permits — all working at unauthorized companies, in breach of the Immigration and Deportation Act.

Additionally, two Indian business visitors working at Gina Wholesale Limited beyond their permitted days were ordered to regularize their stay.

Nshinka warned that immigration permits were issued under strict terms and any breach constitutes an offence under Zambian law.

He added that compliance inspections would continue across the country to enforce adherence.
