President Hakainde Hichilema has called on the church to play a key role in promoting sustainable peace and unity in Zambia.

He made the remarks on Saturday in Mpongwe district, Copperbelt, while officiating the National Conference and 120th anniversary of the Baptist Union of Zambia.

“The church should serve as a bridge among diverse groups in Zambia and continue to speak out against division in the country,” President Hichilema said.

He added that his government would continue collaborating with faith-based organizations to enhance national development.

The Head of State highlighted his administration’s programmes that were reportedly benefiting Zambians, among which include free education policy.

“My administration is actively working on solutions to the country’s electricity challenges and calls for continued support from faith-based organizations in addressing social and economic issues,” he added.

Hichilema also paid tribute to the Baptist Union for its long-standing service to the community and encouraged continued support for Zambia’s social sectors.

In response, Zambia Baptist Union President Reverend Rodwell Chiyakasa urged political parties to champion peace and unity across the nation.

“Political leaders should be at the forefront of promoting peace and unity in the country,” Reverend Chiyakasa said.

He noted that government initiatives such as the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) had benefited a wide cross-section of society.

President Hichilema is on the Copperbelt for a two-day working visit.
