Education minister, Syakalima, commends army for promoting STEM education

Education Minister, Douglas Syakalima, has commended the Zambia Army and other cooperating partners for their continued efforts in advancing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education in the country.

He said government was determined to promote STEM education in all secondary schools, a move aimed at equipping learners with critical skills for national development.

He spoke in Lusaka during the closing ceremony of the Junior Engineers, Technicians and Scientists (JETS) and Tertiary Engineers, Technicians and Scientists (TETS) Fair held at the National Science Centre.

“As Government, one of the key avenues we are pursuing is the recruitment of more teachers specialised in STEM subjects in order to strengthen science education across Zambia,” he said.

The minister also acknowledged stakeholders, including the Zambia Army, for supplementing government’s efforts in improving science and technology education.

Meanwhile, Zambia Army Commander Lieutenant General Geoffrey Choongo Zyeele stressed the importance of leveraging innovation to address the challenges posed by climate change.

In a speech read on his behalf by the Army’s Director of Research and Innovation, Colonel Heartson Kandela, Lt Gen Zyeele reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to strengthening its collaboration with the National Science Centre through signed memoranda of understanding.

“Zambia continues to bear the devastating effects of climate change. There is an urgent need to invest in home-grown innovations and solutions that can address these challenges,” he said.
