Commissioner for lands, Mbewe, threatens tough disciplinary actions against erring staff

Commissioner of Lands, Shadreck Mbewe, has warned that his administration will not transfer erring officers but instead subject them to disciplinary action, including dismissal.

Mbewe said some officers in the Ministry of Lands must change their attitude towards work and refrain from conduct that brought the ministry into disrepute.

Addressing officers in Ndola on Wednesday, the Commissioner stressed that his office would not tolerate illegalities, particularly where such actions expose the ministry to lawsuits.

“Not under my watch. I will not allow this kind of working culture. While integration with stakeholders is vital, as a ministry we must exercise caution, conduct due diligence, and ensure proper administration of land,” he said.

Mbewe further disclosed that the ministry would soon begin engaging traditional leaders to allocate land for economic purposes, with a particular focus on creating opportunities for young people.

Meanwhile, during a courtesy call on Ndola Deputy Permanent Secretary Daniel Kamenga, the Commissioner emphasized the need for stronger collaboration between the ministry and stakeholders to resolve land disputes nationwide.

He also met District Commissioner Precious Njekwa who assured him that her office was working well with ministry officials, particularly on government land matters, and expressed confidence that most disputes would be resolved amicably.

In response, Kamenga expressed optimism that the new Commissioner would bring lasting solutions to the numerous land wrangles affecting the nation.

Mbewe also paid courtesy calls on Ndola Mayor, Jones Kalyati and Town Clerk George Mulenga, who both expressed hope that his leadership would help resolve the many land disputes in the area.

The Commissioner and his entourage later toured IDC land earmarked for a major project, where they found that encroachers had been removed.

He also visited Bwana Mkubwa to assess the extent of land encroachment.
