TAZAMA Pipelines Limited is reportedly set to expand its operations with new pipelines and a 400-megawatt gas power plant, aiming to modernize infrastructure and boost regional energy collaboration.
Acting Managing Director, Rodney Kalota, said the company was advertising for a market product pipeline stretching 1,710 kilometres from Dar es Salaam to Ndola.
The project would be executed as an Engineering, Design, and Construction (EDC) initiative with a focus on modernization.
Within the next two weeks, TAZAMA will also invite bids for a feasibility study on a gas pipeline from Dar es Salaam to Chinsali.
A separate study would examine the potential of a 400MW gas-fired power plant in Chinsali, designed to meet Zambia’s growing energy demands.
Speaking at the Energy Forum for Africa conference during a panel on advancing energy sufficiency in SADC, Kalota said the projects would complement renewable energy initiatives.
“We are exploring the transportation of alternative fuels, such as hydrogen, either with ammonia or blended with natural gas, as a future renewable energy source,” he noted.
He also highlighted the benefits of regional integration, including improved supply chain efficiency, cost-effective access to markets, and enhanced resilience against geopolitical and climate risks.
“Integrated supply routes make it easier to guarantee consistent supply, attract financing for large projects, and pool regional resources toward common energy goals,” he said.
Ministry of Energy Director, Mafayo Ziba, added that Zambia’s vision was to strengthen interconnections with neighbouring countries to ensure reliable domestic supply, not just for exports.
