Yo Maps withdraws from Kwacha music awards, move to sponsor categories sparks mixed reactions from artistes, fans

Yo Maps has announced his withdrawal from the 2025 Kwacha Music Awards, saying he preferred to participate as a sponsor rather than a nominee.

In a statement released through Olio Records on Saturday, his management expressed gratitude to the organisers, saying the awards had played an invaluable role in recognizing and celebrating Zambian artistes.

“We are proud to announce that Olio Records will sponsor two categories at this year’s awards: Best Upcoming Artiste – Central Province and Best Male Artiste,” Yo Maps said.

He explained that the decision was not about seeking personal recognition but about contributing directly to the growth of the industry.

“This sponsorship reflects our commitment to supporting both emerging and established talent while giving back to a platform that has given so much to me and the music industry. We look forward to celebrating artists nationwide and remain dedicated to empowering Zambian music at every level,” he said.

However, the Zambia Association of Musicians (ZAM) has since clarified its position, stating that while it respects Yo Maps’ choice to withdraw, active artistes cannot sponsor categories at the awards.

ZAM said such sponsorships risk compromising the integrity of the event.

The Association instead encouraged Olio Records to consider alternative ways of supporting the industry, such as funding studio time for emerging artistes, supporting collaborations, sponsoring music videos, or organizing masterclasses on the music business.

Reacting to the announcement, Chile One Mr. Zambia, a long-time rival of Yo Maps, described the move as disrespectful, saying no artiste’s record label should be allowed to sponsor any category.

“We would truly appreciate it if you continued to uphold the standards and practices you’ve always followed. Being recognized doesn’t mean we’re desperate for validation Tatwapaya Saana,” Chile One wrote on Facebook.

He stressed that musicians pursue their craft out of love and passion and that fairness and integrity should always come first.

Fans also weighed in on social media with mixed reactions.

Victor Em Jay Bucha wrote: “Just trying to underate the awards ‘WEALTH IN WRONG HANDS’.”

Another fan, Jemude Gates, asked: “How will a big artiste like Macky 2 feel winning the award which is sponcerd by bena long face.”

Angel Musonda argued the Best Male Artist category was too sensitive, saying: “Best male artistes is too sensitive 😅 but ba Kwacha Awards nabo, imagine Arsenal withdrawing from participating in the Premier League so that they can sponsor it 😅 the trophy automatically loses its legibility and belittles the league.”

Christopher, another follower, however saw merit in the move, writing: “Putting Yo Maps in those categories it’s same like taking Manchester United into Africa Cup 😂 good move Olio’s.
