A 25-year-old woman has been detained by police to assist with investigations into the death of her husband, who was found with a deep cut to his throat in Lusaka’s Chaisa Compound.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Zambia Police spokesperson, Chipo Kaitisha, said the incident occurred on the night of November 3, after the deceased, Esau Banda, 25, reportedly returned home from work before exhibiting unusual behaviour.

Kaitisha said Banda knocked off from work at Nsimbi Yanga in Matero at around 6:30 p.m. and later asked his wife, Irety Phiri, to prepare bathing water.

“While his wife was cooking outside, Banda went to bathe but took longer than expected. When she checked on him, she allegedly found him leaving the bathroom looking drowsy,” he said.

He reportedly told her that he had taken an unknown drug.

Kaitisha said Banda later began hallucinating inside the couple’s one-room house, complained of feeling cold and asked his wife to write down his NAPSA password.

He later requested that they go to a nearby market to buy a pen, but allegedly became disoriented on the way and suddenly started running.

His wife reportedly sought help from passers-by, who restrained him and escorted him back home.

“At around 11:00 p.m., Banda allegedly became violent, prompting the couple’s 70-year-old landlady to advise that he be left alone in the room to calm down,” she said.

Shortly afterwards, the wife and the landlady reportedly heard him gasping for breath. When they opened the door, they allegedly found Banda lying motionless on the floor.

Police officers who visited the scene found the body lying in a pool of blood with a deep cut to the neck. A blood-stained kitchen knife was found beside the body, while blood splashes were observed on a television stand and the bedding.

The body was taken to the University Teaching Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination before burial on November 6.

Kaitisha said an inquiry has been instituted and Phiri has been detained to assist police with investigations into the suspected murder.
