National Chairlady, Faith Munthali, said in a statement on Wednesday: “Our chiefs are the revered custodians of our heritage, not subordinates to be publicly chastised. Politically, this action is reckless.”
She added that the President’s conduct alienated the very institutions that ensure stability and legitimacy in communities, while undermining the government’s connection to the people.
“This breach of protocol is damaging to national unity. True leadership requires respecting our traditions, not degrading them,” Munthali said.
Munthali further suggested that President Hichilema required guidance on the respect owed to traditional leaders.
The remarks come after Hichilema expressed concern during the meeting over some traditional leaders who did not stand during the national anthem and others who failed to attend key traditional ceremonies, actions widely interpreted as disrespectful.
