Five people have died and eight others were injured in two separate fatal road traffic accidents recorded along the Great East Road in Lusaka and Chongwe districts on September 9, 2026, police have confirmed.
Police Spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi, said the first accident occurred around 18:00 hours at Nangwenya area in Chongwe District involving a Toyota Quantum minibus, registration number BBE 8349ZM, which was travelling towards Lusaka.
In a statement issued in Lusaka on Thursday, Chilabi said the minibus was carrying ten passengers in addition to the driver, whose identity is not yet known.
Four passengers sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead upon arrival at Chongwe District Hospital and their bodies have been deposited at the hospital mortuary awaiting identification and postmortem examinations.
Five other passengers sustained serious injuries and are admitted to Chongwe District Hospital, where they are receiving treatment and One passenger sustained slight injuries and was treated and discharged.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver allegedly lost control of the minibus due to excessive speed, causing it to veer off the road and overturn several times.
In a related incident, around 23:50 hours, a Toyota Vitz, registration number AID 549, was involved in a fatal accident at the main entrance of Manda Hill Shopping Mall in Lusaka.

The vehicle was driven by 23-year-old William Chibeka, reported to be a student at Evelyn Hone College.
“The driver sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the University Teaching Hospital. His body has been deposited at the UTH mortuary awaiting postmortem examination,” Chilabi said.
He said two passengers sustained serious injuries and were admitted to UTH, where they are receiving medical treatment.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the accident occurred after the driver lost control of the motor vehicle due to excessive speed, causing it to overturn into a drainage channel.
An inquiry file has been opened, and investigations into both accidents are ongoing.
“As Zambia Police Service we wish to urge motorists to observe speed limits, exercise caution and comply with traffic regulations to prevent road traffic accidents and loss of lives,” Chilabi said.
