Police arrest 16 suspected junkies for riotous behaviour in Lusaka

Police in Lusaka have apprehended 16 suspects believed to be part of notorious “junkie” groups for their alleged involvement in riotous behavior, theft, assault, and malicious damage to property.

The arrests followed a well-coordinated operation conducted in Barlaston, Lilanda, George, and Zingalume compounds between October 3 and 4, 2025.

Police Spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga, confirmed the arrests in a statement issued in Lusaka on Monday.

Hamoonga said the suspects, aged between 19 and 30, were linked to violent crimes that occurred on October 1, 2025, during a funeral service at Great Ministries Church in the Barlaston area.

“A video that went viral on social media showed the perpetrators, leading to the successful operation,” he said.

Hamoonga added that police recovered several items, including two unregistered motor vehicles, suspected cannabis, a military bayonet, a knife, a taser gun, and other items believed to have been used in the commission of the offenses.

He said the suspects had been charged with riotous behavior, assault occasioning actual bodily harm (OABH), theft, and malicious damage to property.

“The Zambia Police Service commends members of the public who provided valuable information that led to the successful operation and appeals for continued cooperation to rid communities of violent elements,” he said.

The suspects remain in police custody awaiting court appearance.
