A 35-year-old man of Kasama has died after being attacked by a hippopotamus while fishing in the Lua-luo stream.
According to police, the incident occurred on October 20, 2025, around 06:00 hours along the shores of Lua-luo stream at Kambili Village in Kasama District.
The matter was reported by 59-year-old Tresford Mwansa of the same village, who told police that his son, Justine Mwansa, died instantly after being mauled by the animal.
Police said the victim sustained multiple deep cuts on the head, broken hands, and a large wound on the back of his body.

Munkhondya said the deceased had gone to the Lua-luo stream to fish when he encountered the hippo.
“In the process of doing so, he met a hippo which started chasing him.
He managed to come out of the water and started running. While running, he fell on the ground, and that was how the hippo started biting him all over the body, leaving him dead with multiple cuts, broken hands and a big opening on the back of the body,” she said.
He added that the victim’s father was later informed of the incident by a member of the public who had witnessed the attack and subsequently reported the matter to police.
