Drivers’ institute urges new RTSA Board to act decisively on rising road accidents

The Zambian School of Driving (ZSD) has called on the newly appointed Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) Board to prioritize strategies that will reduce road accidents, safeguard lives, and promote a culture of responsibility among all road users.

According to Zambia Police, road traffic accidents increased by 13 percent in the fourth quarter of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Tuesday, ZSD Driver Improvement Programme Director Hope Kumalo said the sharp escalation in accidents underscored the urgent need for decisive and sustained action to strengthen road safety across the country.

Kumalo noted that the timing of the Board’s appointment, coinciding with the release of the latest traffic statistics, presented both a challenge and an opportunity.

“It is a challenge because the figures highlight the gravity of the situation on our roads. Yet it is also an opportunity, as the new Board can immediately demonstrate its commitment to tackling road safety with the seriousness it deserves,” she said.

She added that this was not the time for lip service but a call for bold leadership, innovative solutions, and measurable results.

Kumalo emphasized the need for the new RTSA Board to establish proper infrastructure for driver testing to ensure fairness, transparency, and safety, as well as to implement a comprehensive training programme for examiners to uphold professional standards.

“We urge the new Board to prioritise service excellence, in line with RTSA’s core values, to build public trust and confidence,” she said.

“The Board’s assumption of office comes at a critical juncture for our nation, as recent statistics released by the Zambia Police Service reveal a concerning rise in road traffic accidents,” she said.
