Singer-songwriter and producer Travis Kazibwe, popularly known as Dr. Tee, has sparked debate in music circles after asserting that contemporary artistes were vocally stronger than those of his generation, but lack depth in content.
Dr. Tee said the challenge facing today’s musicians was not technical ability, but substance, Mdu reports.
He noted that while many current artistes possessed impressive vocal skills and technical proficiency, their music often fell short on delivering meaningful, lasting messages that connect deeply with audiences.
He further contrasted the present music landscape with that of his era, describing a time when the industry was more structured and financially rewarding.
According to Dr. Tee, distributors previously played a central role, often purchasing music even before its official release.
“In those days, distribution was organised and reliable. Today, artists have to hustle to sell their own music,” he said.
Dr. Tee observed that modern musicians were operating in a less stable industry environment, where financial support and formal distribution systems were no longer assured.
As a result, artistes are increasingly forced to manage their own marketing and sales in addition to their creative work.
In the same discussion, he advised upcoming artiste, An-Known, to remain focused and committed to honing his craft.
While acknowledging An-Known’s vocal talent, Dr. Tee encouraged him to strengthen his artistic identity and elevate his brand to achieve sustained success.
“An artiste can become big within their own community,” he said, adding that consistency and refinement were key to long-term growth in the music industry.
