Man City knock Newcastle out of FA Cup, cruise into quarter-finals with 3-1 victory

Omar Marmoush scored twice as Manchester City’s second-string side cruised past Newcastle United with a 3–1 victory to book a place in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

Marmoush once again proved a thorn in Newcastle’s side as City came from behind to secure the win at St James’ Park.

City manager Pep Guardiola had earlier described the prospect of playing in the hostile atmosphere at St James’ Park as a “nightmare,” and it initially looked that way when Harvey Barnes gave the hosts the lead.

However, a much-changed City side showed resilience, responding through Savinho before Marmoush struck twice to seal the victory.

In a match reported by the BBC, the Egyptian forward has now scored seven goals against Newcastle in just six appearances.

Having already knocked Newcastle out of the EFL Cup last month, City have now also ended Eddie Howe’s side’s hopes of reaching Wembley through the FA Cup.

Newcastle began the fifth-round clash strongly, pressing forward with intent. Nick Woltemade came close early on, but his header was cleared off the line by Nico González.

The breakthrough came when Barnes beat the offside trap to latch onto a through ball from Sandro Tonali. The winger cut inside onto his preferred right foot before curling a clinical effort into the far corner to ignite the home crowd.

The goal sparked a response from City, who began to dominate possession and push Newcastle back.

Their pressure eventually paid off when Jeremy Doku delivered a low cross from the left that travelled across the face of goal to Savinho at the back post. The ball struck the forward’s knee and bobbled over the line to level the score.

Newcastle struggled to regain control after the equaliser, and City continued their momentum into the second half.

City took the lead when Matheus Nunes cut the ball back from the right flank, allowing Marmoush to control calmly before firing home from close range.

Just minutes later, Marmoush struck again, unleashing a powerful shot from outside the box that left goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale with no chance.

The victory sees Manchester City reach the FA Cup quarter-finals for the eighth consecutive season, continuing their strong record in the competition.
