The Bank of Zambia (BoZ) has cautioned the public against declaring banknotes counterfeit solely because their security threads appear in different positions.
In a public notice issued on Thursday, BoZ Assistant Director – Communications, Besnat Mwanza, said genuine banknotes of the same denomination could have slight variations in the positioning of their security threads as a result of the normal production process.
Mwanza explained that the variations occurred within a designated area known as the “wandering zone”, where the position of the security thread was allowed to shift slightly during production.
She said the controlled variation helped distribute the additional thickness created by the thread, preventing a ridge from forming when banknote paper was rolled or stacked.

“As a result, security threads on genuine banknotes of the same denomination do not always align exactly, and the eagle may also appear in slightly different positions,” she said.
Mwanza urged members of the public to examine several security features when checking banknotes rather than relying solely on the position of the security thread.
