Zambia National Service (ZNS) Commander Lieutenant General, Maliti Solochi, has called for increased adherence to professional and ethical engineering standards to curb substandard execution of public works.
Solochi made the remarks on Saturday during the opening of the Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ) Northern Region Annual General Meeting held in Kitwe at Garden Court Hotel Kitwe.
He said substandard works were a serious drain on national resources and urged engineers to uphold professional ethics when executing public projects.
“Substandard works are a serious drain to the national coffers. Engineers are called upon to embrace ethical standards in the execution of public works,” Solochi said.
Solochi added that ZNS would next week sign a Memorandum of Understanding with EIZ to undertake joint projects.
He said engineers had a duty to take interest in public works being undertaken across the country.

“Engineers should not be bystanders. Whenever you see something is not okay regarding public works, you should alert the authorities,” he said.
Meanwhile, EIZ president, Wesley Kaluba, said the institution aimed to take a leading role in promoting innovation through research and development.
“We have a lot of programmes lined up to drive change in society. We are establishing a centre of excellence in Kalumbila to spearhead research and development in the field of engineering,” Kaluba said.
He added that EIZ would continue strengthening partnerships with the government and the private sector to help drive transformation in key sectors of the economy.
