National Forensic Authority pledges technical support to Defence teams in disaster response

The National Forensic Authority has pledged to collaborate with the Ministry of Defence by offering technical support to Rapid Deployment Response Teams during national disasters.

NFA Executive Director, Lawson Simapuka, said the authority would provide disaster-victim identification, DNA profiling and other essential forensic services to strengthen emergency response operations.

He made the commitment when he paid a courtesy call on Defence Permanent Secretary, Maambo Haamaundu, in Lusaka on Thursday.

Simapuka noted that the Ministry frequently handled emergencies across the country and that NFA’s involvement would enhance the efficiency and accuracy of response teams.

He added that the authority was preparing to offer DNA analysis to defence and security wings to aid in identifying criminals at crime scenes.

He explained that the ongoing development of the National Population Database would further enable the authority to detect and analyse DNA collected from crime scenes, allowing for faster and more professional identification of offenders. According to him, the database will become a critical tool in strengthening the fight against crime.

In response, Haamaundu said the introduction of forensic DNA analysis would help investigators produce conclusive evidence in criminal cases.

He emphasized that while the Ministry of Defence was mandated to maintain peace and security in the country, the added support from the NFA would enhance the delivery of justice.

Haamaundu said the forensic authority’s role would significantly improve the capability of investigative teams handling complex cases.
