Kasama police arrest teenager over alleged death of taxi driver

Police in Kasama have arrested a 19-year-old man in connection with the alleged murder of a 28-year-old taxi driver who died after being assaulted by a group of men.Northern Province Police Commanding Officer, Namunji Mulonda, said the incident occurred on August 8, 2026, around 17:00 hours at Musenga Village in Kasama.

The suspect, Webby Katongo, is alleged to have assaulted Bwalya Mutembo together with three other men who remain at large.

Mulonda said the matter was reported to Kasama Central Police Station at about 18:00 hours by Christine Mutale, 75, who reported that her nephew had allegedly been attacked by Katongo and three other men.

According to police, Mutembo was driving a taxi from Kasama town towards Musenga when an unidentified motorcyclist allegedly cut into his path.

Mulonda said the deceased stopped and confronted the motorcyclist, resulting in an altercation.

“When Katongo and three of the rider’s friends saw the confrontation, they resorted to beating up the deceased using kicks and fists until he became unconscious,” Mulonda said in a statement.

Mutembo was rushed to Kasama General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Police officers who visited the hospital found no visible injuries on the body, which was subsequently deposited in the mortuary pending a post-mortem examination to establish the cause of death.

Mulonda said Katongo had been apprehended and detained in police custody and would appear in court soon.

The other three suspects remain at large.

“Zambia Police condemns murder occurring due to misunderstanding by a motorist and a motorbike and further warns members of the general public not to take the law into their own hands,” Mulonda said.
