Two people have died in a hit-and-run road traffic accident involving a motorcycle and a light truck along the Great East Road in Chongwe District, with police subsequently arresting the truck driver.

The accident occurred on November 7, 2026, at around 19:08 hours at Nangwenya Bridge, according to Zambia Police Service spokesperson Chipo Kaitisha.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Sunday, Kaitisha said an unidentified male motorcyclist was travelling from east to west on an unregistered Boxer motorcycle, carrying an unidentified male passenger.

She said the motorcycle was hit from behind by a Mitsubishi Fuso Fighter light truck, registration number BAE 7111, which was travelling in the opposite direction.

“As a result of the impact, the motorcyclist sustained fatal head injuries, while his pillion passenger sustained multiple fatal bodily injuries,” Kaitisha said.

She said both victims were rushed to Chongwe District Hospital, where they were pronounced dead upon arrival.

Kaitisha said the truck driver allegedly failed to stop after the accident and fled the scene.

“The bodies of the deceased have since been deposited at Chongwe District Hospital Mortuary, awaiting identification and postmortem examinations,” she said.

She said the motorcycle was extensively damaged and had been taken to Chongwe Police Station, where it was awaiting re-examination by the Road Transport and Safety Agency.

Kaitisha said following investigations in the early hours of November 8, 2026, police traffic officers traced and apprehended the driver at the Food Reserve Agency Depot in Chongwe District.

“The suspect has been identified as Greyd Mweemba, aged 40, of Mwantalasha Village in Chongwe District. He is currently detained at Chongwe Police Station and is expected to be charged accordingly,” Kaitisha said.

She added that the truck had also been impounded and was parked at Chongwe Police Station.

Kaitisha appealed to Chongwe residents and members of the public who may have information that could help identify the two deceased persons to report to the nearest police station.

She also urged motorists to exercise caution, observe traffic regulations and never flee the scene of an accident, particularly where lives have been lost or people injured.
