A 40-year-old mother and her seven-year-old daughter have died after drowning in a water-filled ditch in Luwingu District, Northern Province, police have confirmed.
The tragic incident happened on March 28, 2026, when Annie Chibusha and her daughter, Esther Chibusha, drowned while fetching water from a ditch created by gravel mining.
According to authorities, the child slipped and fell into the water, prompting her mother to jump in after her in an attempt to rescue her. However, she also drowned, and both died on the spot.

Northern Province Police Commanding Officer, Simunji Mulonda, said another woman who was drawing water from the same ditch screamed for help, but by the time villagers arrived, the two were already dead.
“The bodies were retrieved and kept at the deceased’s house awaiting burial,” Mulonda said in a statement issued on Sunday.
Police have ruled out foul play and advised the family to proceed with burial. An inquiry file has been opened.
Mulonda has since cautioned members of the public to avoid drawing water from unsafe or undesignated sources.
“Members of the public should draw water from designated wells to prevent such fatalities,” he warned.
