Tonse Pamodzi Alliance Secretary General, Celestine Mukandila, has called on President Hakainde Hichilema to peacefully concede defeat in the 2026 general elections, saying accepting the outcome of an election was a hallmark of democracy.
Speaking to the media on Friday in Lusaka, Mukandila said there was nothing wrong with conceding defeat, urging the President to respect the will of the Zambian people if he had lost the election.
“When you lose elections, you lose and accept that. That is what Zambia is known for,” he said.
Mukandila warned against allowing democracy to be undermined by what he described as pettiness, selfishness and greed by an individual.
He said Zambia’s democratic tradition must be protected, adding that the country should remain an example of peaceful transfers of power.
Mukandila further urged Zambians to remain vigilant, describing the day as a defining moment for the country’s democracy.
“Today is the day when a revolution must begin,” he said.
