Victoria Falls records 18.5% surge in holiday visitors

The Victoria Falls recorded a significant rise in visitor numbers during the 2026 Easter holiday period, with total entries increasing to 10,690 from 9,018 in 2025—an 18.5 percent jump, official data shows.

Figures from the National Heritage Conservation Commission indicate that the growth was largely driven by a sharp rise in domestic tourism. Zambian adult visitors increased from 6,054 in 2025 to 8,138 this year, representing a 34.4 percent surge.

In a statement on Thursday, Ministry of Tourism Principal Public Relations Officer, Nelly Banda, said the trend reflected a growing inclination among citizens to explore one of the country’s most iconic natural attractions during peak holiday seasons.

Commenting on the performance, Ministry of Tourism Permanent Secretary, Evans Muhanga, praised both local and foreign travellers for their continued interest.

“The increase in visitation to the Victoria Falls during the Easter period is highly encouraging, particularly the strong participation by Zambian travellers,” Muhanga said.

“This demonstrates a growing appreciation of the country’s rich tourism offerings and reinforces the importance of domestic tourism as a key pillar in sustaining sector growth,” he said.

Muhanga added that the positive results aligned with ongoing government initiatives such as the Take a Holiday Yamu Lokocampaign, which encourages citizens to experience local destinations.

Visitor traffic also peaked on Saturday, April 4, 2026, with 4,151 entries, compared to 3,470 on the equivalent day in 2025—reflecting heightened holiday demand.

International arrivals remained steady, declining slightly to 1,237 in 2026 from 1,292 the previous year.

Zambia Tourism Agency Acting Chief Executive Officer, Abigail Shansonga, noted that the growth underscored the impact of sustained destination marketing.

“The continued growth in domestic tourism is a clear indication that our campaigns are resonating with the local market. It is encouraging to see more Zambians taking pride in exploring their own country,” she said.

Banda added that the Ministry remained committed to strengthening international marketing efforts to ensure Zambia—and particularly the Victoria Falls—maintains its position as a leading global destination.
