The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has announced 70 new constituencies, bringing the national total to 256, with six allocated to Lusaka Province. These are Chilanga North, Chongwe West, Kafue East, Makeni, Roma and Lima constituencies.

Announcing the new boundaries in Lusaka on Thursday, ECZ Chairperson, Mwaangala Zaloumis, told stakeholders at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre that the changes follow nationwide consultations and technical assessments.

In Central Province, the new constituencies are Keembe West, Mwomboshi, Bwacha South, Kapiri Mposhi West, Mkushi South, Mumbwa West, Nkundalila and Mwembezhi West.

Copperbelt Province has been allocated Konkola, Chingola West, Chambishi, Lufwanyama East, Kalalangabo, Mpongwe East and Dag Hammerskjoeld.

Eastern Province now has Chadiza East, Chama Central, Chasefu North, Chipangali West, Chipata North, Lumezi South, Lusangazi Central, Malambo West and Nyimba North.

In Luapula Province, the new constituencies are Kalungwishi, Chifunabuli North, Luongo, Mansa East and Mweru.

Muchinga Province has six: Chilinda, Nkombwa, Lwitikila, Mafinga South, Mpika South and Mwenzo.

Northern Province has six as well—Kundabwika, Kasama North, Luwingu Central, Saise, Mpulungu South and Mpanda.

North-Western Province has seven: Kabompo West, Lumwana, Mufwashi, Dongwe, Mwinilunga East, Solwezi North and Zambezi Central.

Southern Province has nine: Choma South, Itezhi-Tezhi West, Kalomo South, Kazungula North, Maramba, Magoye West, Monze East, Namwala East and Kariba.

Western Province has seven: Kalabo South, Luampa West, Lukulu South, Mongu East, Senanga North, Sesheke West and Shangombo North.

Zaloumis said the final list was derived from an analysis of submissions from districts and provinces.

“The final determination of the constituencies to be announced today is drawn from the analysis of those district and provincial submissions,” she said.

She added that the exercise was aimed at improving representation and reflecting population changes.

Zaloumis also addressed speculation surrounding the process.

“I now wish to make it crystal clear that no district or province was pre-allocated a fixed number of constituencies before the consultative process was concluded. Claims to the contrary are false and misleading,” she said.

She said the Commission had publicly rejected such claims and remained committed to “transparency, accountability and adherence to established legal and procedural frameworks.”
