Three people have died in a fatal road accident which occurred April 23, 2026, along the Great North Road at 11 Miles in the Savanna Hill area of Lusaka, Police have revealed.

Police Spokesperson, Godfrey Chilabi, said the accident involved a Toyota Hiace minibus registration number BCG 9740, driven by Kennedy Pungwa, aged 48, of Chazanga Compound in Lusaka.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Thursday, Chilabi said the vehicle was carrying 16 passengers and was en route to the Lusaka Central Business District.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the accident occurred while the vehicle was ascending a hill. It is reported to have rolled backwards before overturning, resulting in injuries to passengers and extensive damage to the vehicle.

“As a result of the accident, three (3) passengers, comprising two (2) males and one (1) female, sustained fatal injuries,” Chilabi said.

The Zambia Police Service has instituted investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident, including the mechanical condition of the vehicle and other possible contributing factors.

Chilabi urged members of the public, particularly motorists, to exercise caution when driving on hilly terrain and to ensure that vehicles were roadworthy before undertaking any journey.
