Andyford Mayele Banda has stepped down as vice-presidential running mate for the Organized People’s Party, the party announced Thursday.

OPP presidential candidate, Dr. Brian Mushimba, said the party respected Banda’s decision and thanked him for his dedication.

“The Organized People’s Party wishes to inform the public that Mr. Andyford Banda has stepped down as our vice-presidential running mate,” Mushimba said in a statement issued in Lusaka on Wednesday.

“We fully respect his decision, thank him for his dedication to our shared journey, and wish him the very best moving forward.”

Mushimba said the OPP has officially notified the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) and requested guidance on the next legal steps.

“Following this development, we have officially notified the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) and requested guidance on the next legal steps. The OPP will fully comply with the law and the directives issued by the Commission,” he said.

Mushimba stated that the party remained united and committed to providing leadership to Zambians.

“Our party remains united, focused, and deeply committed to providing Zambians with the credible, practical, and principled leadership our country deserves. Our vision and our promises to the people of Zambia stand firm,” he said.

Mushimba added that the party would provide a formal update to the nation once it received further guidance from the electoral commission.
