Hichilema orders probe into political violence in Kaputa, Mazabuka

President Hakainde Hichilema has directed security agencies to investigate reported incidents of political violence in Kaputa, Mazabuka and ensure perpetrators face the law.

President Hichilema expressed deep concern over the incidents and condemned them in the strongest possible terms.

In a statement issued by Clayson Hamasaka, State House Chief Communications Specialist, President Hichilema warned that political ambition or grievances could not justify violence or loss of life.

“Let the message be heard in every constituency and every compound. The law in Zambia is blind to party colours. Whoever you are, if you perpetrate violence you will answer for it before the courts and you will answer alone. No party will shield you. You are on your own,” he stated.

President Hichilema added that those who carry weapons to a political gathering had lost the argument.

“Peace is not the reward we receive after development, but the ground on which all development is built. No investor builds, no farmer prospers, no child learns in the shadow of the panga,” he said.

The Head of State said Zambia did not become the beacon of peace in the region by accident, noting it was a choice to settle differences through the ballot and not the fist.

“We are, and will remain, One Zambia, One Nation. We may disagree loudly, as free people should. But when the campaigning is done, we go home to the same Zambia, under the same flag, sharing the same future,” President Hichilema said.

He reiterated that the country would never return to the dark days of the past where thuggery was the order of the day.

As the country approaches the General Election on 13 August, the President called on every leader, candidate, cadre and supporter to choose peace.

“Our democracy is stronger than the handful who would disturb it. Together we will protect the peace our forefathers won, and hand it on, whole and unbroken, to those who come after,” President Hichilema said.

Earlier, the Inspector General of Police, Graphael Musamba, revealed that 10 suspects had been arrested over reported political murder in Kaputa in connection with a political-related murder recorded in Kaputa District, Northern Province, on 29 June 2026.

Zambia Monitor had reported that Musamba said the murder incident occurred on June 29, 2026, around 19:35 hours at Pump House Village and was incidented at Kaputa Police Station by Joseph Chileshe, aged 36, of Kaputa Boma.

It was alleged that Humphrey Lwisha, a supporter of the United Party for National Development (UPND) from Shadreck Village, was killed following a clash between supporters of the UPND and the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP).

Preliminary investigations indicate that a group of UPND supporters, including the deceased, travelled from Kaputa Boma to Pump House Village. On arrival, they met NRPUP supporters at a drinking place, where a fight broke out.
