Hours after announcing a surprise halt in the release of election results, Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has retraced its steps by lifting the suspension of the counting of ballots and announcement of results. The latest development was announced by ECZ Chairperson, Mwangala Zaloumis, on Friday.
The commission said the first set of election results would be announced at 2200 hours (2000 GMT) on Friday evening.
The ECZ had earlier suspended the counting and announcement of results nationwide, citing violence at some polling stations, and directed the media and other stakeholders to leave totalling centres pending a review.
The lifting of the suspension clears the way for the commission to resume the verification and announcement of results from Thursday’s presidential and general elections.
The decision comes after opposition presidential candidate, Brian Mundubile, accused the ECZ of using the suspension as a ploy to deny him victory and called for the immediate resumption of the announcement of results.
