Ten suspects have been apprehended and detained in police custody in connection with a political-related murder recorded in Kaputa District, Northern Province, on 29 June 2026, Inspector General of Police Graphel Musamba has revealed.

Musamba said the murder incident occurred on June 29, 2026, around 19:35 hours at Pump House Village and was reported to Kaputa Police Station by Joseph Chileshe, aged 36, of Kaputa Boma.

The Inspector General of Police provided the update in a statement on electoral security operations in the country issued in Lusaka on Tuesday.

It was alleged that Humphrey Lwisha, a supporter of the United Party for National Development (UPND) from Shadreck Village, was killed following a clash between supporters of the UPND and the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP).

Preliminary investigations indicate that a group of UPND supporters, including the deceased, travelled from Kaputa Boma to Pump House Village. On arrival, they met NRPUP supporters at a drinking place, where a fight broke out.

During the fight, Humphrey Lwisha was allegedly stabbed in the head. He was rushed to Kaputa District Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The body has been deposited in the hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem examination

Musamba said the arrest comes as the Zambia Police Service reached the halfway point of the campaign period ahead of the general elections scheduled for Thursday, 13 August 2026.

In a related incident, police recorded one murder case in Magoye Area, Mazabuka District, in which a driver of an independent candidate for Magoye Constituency was allegedly murdered.

“Let me reiterate clearly no individual or political grouping will be allowed to undermine public peace, regardless of status or affiliation,” Musamba said.
