Ecobank Zambia has pledged a total of K142,001 towards the inaugural NAPSA Pensioners Marathon, with K101,000 officially handed over to the National Pension Scheme Authority in Lusaka on Thursday.

The marathon is scheduled for Saturday, July 25, 2026 and will bring together pensioners, workers, students, corporates, elite athletes, and members of the public under the theme “Your Health Is Your Wealth.”

Speaking during the sponsorship announcement in Lusaka, in a speech read on her behalf by Richard Musukwa, Head of Corporate Banking, Ecobank Zambia Managing Director Aina Moore said the partnership was more than a corporate contribution.

“This partnership is more than a corporate contribution, it is a reflection of our deep commitment to the health, wellness, and vitality of the communities we serve. At Ecobank, we believe that good health is good business,” Moore said.

She stated that the marathon was not just a sporting event but a national wellness initiative and a platform for dignity in ageing and social cohesion.

Moore quoted Nelson Mandela: “Sport has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does.”

To support the event, Ecobank Zambia announced an initial contribution of K100,001 towards the hosting of the historic marathon.

Moore said more than 70 Ecobank staff members had already expressed eagerness to participate in the marathon.

Inspired by the staff response, she said Ecobank added an extra K42,000, bringing the bank’s total sponsorship to K142,001.

Receiving the sponsorship voucher, NAPSA Director General, Muyangwa Muyangwa, expressed appreciation to Ecobank Zambia for the K101,000 contribution.

“This generous contribution reflects Ecobank’s confidence in the vision of the Marathon and demonstrates the bank’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote healthier communities and contribute to national development,” Muyangwa said.

He added that the Marathon was conceived as more than just a sporting event but that it was a platform designed to promote healthy living, encourage community participation and raise awareness on the importance of social security and retirement planning.

Muyangwa said NAPSA recognized that the wellbeing of members extended beyond financial security.

“Healthy citizens are more productive, more resilient and better positioned to enjoy the benefits of retirement. It is for this reason that we continue to invest in initiatives that promote both wellness and social protection,” he said.

Muyangwa noted that the partnership demonstrated the value of collaboration between public institutions and the private sector.

“By supporting the Pensioners Marathon, Ecobank is contributing to a broader vision of promoting healthier lifestyles, strengthening community engagement and creating greater awareness of the importance of social security,” he said.

Muyangwa also acknowledged the growing number of organisations supporting the marathon and appealed to others to come on board.

“Every contribution, regardless of its size, will help us deliver a successful event and maximise its impact on the lives of our people,” Muyangwa said.

He argued that the true success of the Pensioners Marathon would not be measured by the number of participants on July 25, 2026 alone.

“It will be measured by the lives we inspire, the awareness we create, the partnerships we strengthen and the positive change we bring to our communities,” Muyangwa said.
